Kokikai Aikido Southwest was established in December of 1991 to offer the benefits of Aikido practice to
the Tempe community. New students are welcome to join at any time
and may come to practice as often as they like. No previous martial
arts experience is necessary.
Kokikai Aikido Southwest is the southwest USA regional headquarters for Kokikai Aikido International; affiliated dojos within this region are located in Arizona, Colorado, and New Mexico.
The dojo is open five nights a week and on Saturday for regular
practice. Children's classes are offered on Mondays and Saturdays.
In addition, we hold special events throughout the year. Dojo members
are invited to participate in Aikido summer camps and winter camps,
held annually in the Philadelphia-New York area, and in fall camps,
held every other year in the Phoenix area.
Guest instructors often visit the dojo, and we are occasionally
honored with a visit by Aikido Master Shuji Maruyama, head of Kokikai
Aikido International.
Other dojo events include public Aikido demonstrations, promotion examinations for qualified members, and social get-togethers.

David Nachman and Veronica Burrows began their study of Aikido
under the direct supervision of Kokikai Aikido founder Shuji Maruyama.
Mr. Nachman holds the rank of sixth degree black belt, having studied
Aikido since 1976. Ms. Burrows has studied Aikido since 1977, and holds
a fifth degree black belt. They have taught Aikido to adults and
children since 1981, when they founded Aikido practice groups in
Princeton, New Jersey. Students of their training continue to instruct
these flourishing practice groups, and have since founded many
additional Aikido groups.
After moving to Arizona, Mr. Nachman and Ms. Burrows started an Aikido Club at Arizona State University in 1986. This club still thrives and participates in dojo special events. In addition to providing Aikido instruction through regular classes, they also organize weekend-long Aikido intensives and present workshops and demonstrations to raise interest in and awareness of the fascinating and challenging art of Aikido.
