Aikido is a modern Japanese martial art. It is a purely defensive
art based on holds, throws, and joint locks. Through a practical
philosophy of harmony and non-dissention, the Aikido practitioner
learns to control, contain, deflect, and redirect attacks. Because
Aikido makes use of the attacker's own power, great physical strength
is not required for effective self-defense. Women and men of any age
can develop calmness, greater flexibility and stamina, and improved
timing and coordination through regular Aikido practice. Along with
self-defense, training in the art of Aikido includes concentration
breathing and meditation exercises, and practice with wooden sword
and staff.
